The painting is of a fair size and consists of a half portrait from head to waist, housed in a mahogany frame of good quality. The portrait is one of the first members of the Brotherhood, Balthus the First, a figure who has been all but forgotten now. Balthus is caught in a familiar pose, head bowed, eyes cast to one side in apparent deference. Balthus though much of his face is hidden is obviously not a handsome man, somewhat corpulent and of phlegmatic complexion he is ensconced in a thick dark cowl which hides much of his unappealing form. Balthus clasps a long-knife in one hand.
